When setting up my home shortly after getting married, I remember looking for the cookware that came in a set, had lots of pieces and wasn’t too expensive.  As the years went by I grew to love cooking and we learned more about cookware materials and what they are made from, I made an investment in cookware I plan to have forever.

With all the choices out there.  It can be confusing and difficult to make an educated decision.  I have broken down for you some of the most popular ones.

Teflon or Non-stick pans

Teflon compared to other pans are light and easy to use and a breeze to clean up.  However, I have given away every last one of these pans and will never have these again in my cooking pantry.  Non-stick coating or Teflon is made from a chemical called PFOA perfluorooctanoic acid; which is a man-made chemical.  This compound is burned off in the process, but researchers have found levels to be consistent in every person.  In some studies, they have found an increase in the risk of some cancers with people exposed to PFOA(1)  PFOA is also found in water, plants, fabrics, carpeting.  Leaching fumes into the air.  You can Lower your exposure to these chemicals by ditching these pans.

Aluminum

Aluminum is an inexpensive material which many pans are made from today.  It makes up many of our day to day items.  Safety concerns linking aluminum to Alzheimer’s disease arose when large amounts of aluminum were found in Alzheimer’s patients, suggesting a link.  When using these pans foods that are acidic like tomatoes or highly basic like baking soda cause leaching into the food. (2)  This leaching of aluminum goes directly to our kidneys to process.  Aluminum is listed as a toxic chemical for the human nervous system and immune system.  Using alternatives to limit exposure would be wise.

Enamel Cookware

My personal favorite.  Enamel cookware balances heat evenly.  Some brands like Staub have a built-in baster in the lid for added flavor, juice and perfect for slow cooking.  Easy to clean and free from lead, PFOA, PTFE, cadmium.  These pans also are made for the stove to oven.  A high investment but worth it. Staub 4 Quart Round Cocotte, Black

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel heats up fast and has a good distribution of heat.  Stainless pans are a less expensive alternative from enamel cookware but are just as easy to use.  Some say there is a risk from naturally occurring materials iron, chromium, and manganese.  However, based on research scientist believe there is less of a  health concern than other substances or pans. (3)(4) Stainless is less prone to leaching.  It is a nonreactive cookware, not affecting foods.

When choosing cookware choose health over cost or convenience.  Remember both have a long-lasting investment!
