Bone Broth

What is bone broth? Bone broth has been around for thousands of years.  It comes in many forms, canned, in a jar you can purchase it frozen or simply make it yourself.  Your grandmother used to make it and was the go to for everyone in the family who was sick.

Bone broth, when allowed to cook slowly for 14-24 hours, releases super healers, collagen, glutamine, glycine.  These super healers help heal your body from the inside.

Benefits of Bone Broth and Why you should be drinking it

Research has been shown the benefits of bone broth are beneficial for many conditions.  Contribute to reducing inflammation and improving digestion, asthma, and joint pain.  This is due to the amino acids that are released while cooking the broth.  These are incredibly beneficial and healing.  Aiding the body also with connective tissues, joints, organs assisting in hair and nail growth.

Broth can be made from beef or chicken.  Both have healing benefits.  For someone like myself with a leaky gut, this broth is magical.  It is something I always have on hand in my freezer.  The more you use it the more benefits you receive.  It can be used just like canned broth you would purchase.  The difference is your homemade broth has had the chance to cook and meld together all the healing benefits.

Bone Broth Recipe

  • Cooked Organic Chicken Carcass
  • water to cover
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 4 carrots chopped
  • 4 celery stocks chopped
  • 1-2 Tbsps unfiltered apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 lemon sliced or quartered(optional)
  • 4 cloves garlic or garlic powder/salt
  • 1 tsp spices of choice (my go to’s are turkey seasoning, allspice, thyme)

NOTE: You can simplify this recipe by just adding the bones, water, apple cider vinegar.  The other ingredients all are to add flavor. Feel free to add any additional veggies for added flavor as well.

You can roast a whole chicken or purchase chicken bones.  I cook a whole chicken once a week and use the leftover carcass. See my Roast Chicken recipe.

After chicken is cooked and cooled, separate meat from the skin.  Place meat in a glass container for additional meals in the week.  In a Dutch oven or a slow cooker place chicken carcass on the bottom, fill enough filtered water to cover entire carcass.  Add 1/4 cup unfiltered apple cider vinegar.  You can add as little or as many vegetables as you like.  I prefer to add veggies as if I were making a chicken soup.  Cover and cook 9-24 hours.  Allow to cool and skim off any leftover meat and remove the bones.  You will find a gelatin has formed on the top when it’s cooled.  Keep this intact it is helpful and in sealing.  Store in mason jars.  Wide Mouth Ball Jar  Can be frozen.
