We’ve heard for years the importance of drinking water. Some say 8-10 glasses of water a day others add or subtract from this number. How many glasses of water should you drink in a day to get the benefits and stay hydrated? Here is a simple water goal calculator and tips to spice up your water.
Simple Calculation body weight divided by 2 equals glasses of water needed
The simplest way to calculate this number is to take your body weight and divide it by 2; this gives you the amount your body needs. Example a woman who weighs 120 pounds divide by 2 equals 60 ounces or 7.5 eight ounce glasses of water. One thing to keep in mind for every glass of caffeinated drink you have you must add one additional glass of water. Drinking caffeinated beverages causes your body to excrete more fluids than it takes in. You lose fluid each and every cup of coffee you take in. The rule is always to replace what your body loses. Some of the effects of not taking in enough water/fluids
Some of the consequences of not taking in enough water/fluids are dry skin, constipation, bladder infections, and washing or depleting vital nutrients in the body.
Spice up your water
Drinking enough water isn’t easy. One of the questions I get asked all the time is “how do you get your water not to be boring”? I struggle with this too. It gets boring. Try spicing up your water bringing more flavor and interest. If it tastes good there’s a greater chance we will meet this goal.
- Add some fruit slices. Some of my favorites include lemon, strawberries, and cucumber. But you can add any of your favorites.
- Try some fizzy mineral water for variety.
- Add some herbs. Try adding mint or basil.
- Try some organic; no sugar added juice. 1 oz to 8 oz glass of water. Warning make sure you read the label for no sugar added. Pomegranate is loaded with health benefits and tastes great.
- Another idea is to use essential oils. Add a few drops of lemon, lavender, or peppermint. Adds a boost to your water and immune system or digestion. www.mydoterra.com/abundantlivingmommy

Water is critical to our bodies health. It assists in cellular health, mental health, helps fight fatigue, gives us energy and boosts our immune system. One of the biggest ways I recognize not getting enough water in a day is my skin. My skin complexion is smoother, firmer and a natural wrinkle cure, which is important these days. Another way is fighting off headaches. If you notice a headache coming on try drinking water, this could be a sign of dehydration. Also, aids in weight loss.
How do you get your kids to drink more water?
This is a big issue and not easy these days when we see soda and juice drinks everywhere. One of the simplest ways just doesn’t have another option. In our house, it’s only water and milk. My daughter doesn’t ask for anything else. Our kids are a reflection of our choices. We are their guide. I’m not saying they can never have juice. But teaching our children good choices early is easier and better for their long term health. Important for brain function, development and growth. We start out at the beginning of the day upon waking with water. Encourage water drinking throughout the day. If you do choose juice to dilute it with water, so they only get a little juice but mostly water. Make sure to get no sugar added juice.
