Deodorant Vs Antiperspirant

Ok, so this is a topic no one likes to talk about, body odor.  It is a fact of life, we all sweat some more than others.  There are many different types of deodorants or antiperspirants available today.   What is the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?  Is one safer than the other?

Sweating is your bodies way of cooling itself down.  The smell or odor is a result of the bacteria in your body.

Deodorant

Deodorant kills the bacteria and usually has fragrances to mask the smell.  Deodorants do contain chemicals, however, because they can be listed under fragrances the FDA does not require companies to list all ingredients.

Antiperspirant

Antiperspirants, on the other hand, are very different.  They work to block and plug sweat glands.  Plugging up the bacteria in your body instead of killing it or allowing it to work its way out of your body.  Also, one key ingredient in antiperspirants is aluminum.
There are two types of aluminum found Aluminum Zirconium and Aluminum Chloride.  Which are a similar hormone make up as estrogen?    This promotes the growth of breast cancer tissues and tumors.  Over time this builds up in your body.  Aluminum is also linked to Alzheimer’s and is an endocrine inhibitor.   Limiting your exposure is essential to your health.

Several actions you can take

1. make or purchase a deodorant that is natural.  One that does not contain aluminum.  Limit the exposure to chemicals and fragrances.
2. When your body is producing an unpleasant odor, it is due to a buildup of toxins in your body.  Try detoxing with bath, flushing body with lots of water, staying hydrated.  Detox juice drinks.  Eating good quality food.  Fresh fruit and veggies.  Low in saturated fats and processed foods as well as sugar.

Here is my recipe for Deodorant

    • Mix shea butter and coconut oil in a large mason jar, Use a jar you plan to use just for this in the future.  Over medium heat bring to a boil water in the pot large enough to allow the mason jar to be added.  Allow mixture to melt.  Remove from heat add remaining ingredients. You can purchase empty deodorant containers like this one Containers for Deodorant.
    • These containers are made in the USA and are BPA free.  When the mixture has cooled slightly, add the liquid to the empty deodorant stick and refrigerate until set.  In the warm weather months, you might want to keep in refrigerator to help with consistency. Depending on where you live.
